The Best Trails and Views for Adventure Seekers

Explore the beauty of Montenegro by hiking
Nestled between the Adriatic Sea and Montenegro's rugged mountains lies the picturesque town of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has become a favorite among adventure seekers. With its stunning scenery and varied terrain, Kotor offers some of the best hiking trails in the Balkans. Whether you're an experienced hiker or just starting out, you can find a trail that suits you.
1. The most popular hike in Kotor is the climb to the fortress of San Giovanni, which offers breathtaking views of the town and the Bay of Kotor. The trail begins at the entrance to the old town and winds its way up the steep slopes to the fortress, which sits at an elevation of 1,200 feet. There are 1426 stairs from down to the fortress. The hike is challenging but rewarding and takes about two hours to complete. It is recommended to bring drinking water and to wear comfortable shoes to overcome the trail as easily as possible.
The first part of the trail takes you to the tower of Saint Roko. Although it is only about 200 meters long, that section is quite demanding. The fortress is located at 260 meters above sea level, but the very fact that the ramparts are quite winding and that there are a lot of steps on them makes the ascent much more difficult. Although the tower you first come across is not well preserved, you already have the opportunity to enjoy the view of the rooftops of the city and the Bay of Kotor.
After going about another 300 meters uphill, you reach the church of Our Lady of the Health, built after the plague epidemic in the 16th century as a sign of gratitude. Nearby is a part of the rampart called the Small Fortress. You also have the possibility to climb to the top of that fortress, but only if you are careful and brave enough, as its stairs are quite steep. From there you can choose which way to take to the San Giovanni fortress or the St Ivan fortress as locals call it. The fortress dates back to the 9th century and was renovated later on. It was a perfect spot for observing the surroundings and warning about possible attacks. Don’t miss to take perfect photos of the phenomenal scenery and rest with all that beauty.
2. For those looking for a longer hike, the Vrmac Ridge Trail is a great option. This trail starts in the village of Gornja Lastva and follows a ridge line that offers stunning views of the Adriatic Sea and the Bay of Kotor. The trail is about 6 miles long and takes approximately 4 hours to complete. Along the way, you'll pass through dense forests and meadows filled with wildflowers. The trail is moderately challenging, with some steep inclines, but the breathtaking views from the top of the mountain make the effort worth it. The summit of Mount Vrmac offers a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and the Bay of Kotor, providing hikers with a sense of awe and accomplishment.
3. Another great option for hiking in Kotor is the trail to the village of Njegusi, located on the slopes of Mount Lovcen. This trail starts at the top of the Serpentine Road, a famous stretch of road that winds its way up the mountainside. The house and furniture show the way a typical upper-class Montenegrin family in the 19th century.
