If you're seeking an unforgettable boating experience, the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro offers remarkable routes and stops. This stunning bay provides exploration of beautiful and historic destinations including the UNESCO-listed town of Kotor and the ancient fishing village of Perast.
Our Lady of the Rocks
One essential stop is the iconic Our Lady of the Rocks, a man-made island featuring a beautiful church honoring the Virgin Mary, surrounded by sparkling blue waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling.
According to local legend, the island was created over centuries by seamen who discovered an icon of the Madonna and Child on a rock on July 22, 1452. Each successful voyage prompted adding another rock, gradually building the island.
Church Features
The stunning church displays beautiful frescoes and paintings. Notable artwork includes masterful paintings by Tripo Kokolja, a renowned Baroque artist, depicting biblical scenes and local landscapes. Italian artists also contributed pieces, along with an icon of Our Lady of the Rocks, crafted by Lovro Dobricevic of Kotor around 1452.
Museum Highlights
The church houses a museum containing fascinating artifacts including ancient weapons, traditional clothing, and religious relics. A notable highlight is a renowned votive tapestry created by Jacinta Kunic-Mijovic from Perast. She spent 25 years completing this embroidery while awaiting her beloved's return. The work features golden and silver threads and, remarkably, the artist's own hair โ showing color changes from brown to nearly white reflecting her aging during creation.
Surrounding Coastline Beauty
The Bay of Kotor's surrounding coastline displays charming fishing villages, picturesque coves, and dramatic cliffs. Crystal-clear waters provide excellent opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, and diving.
Island of Saint George
The nearby island of Saint George, named after Kotor's protector, carries a mysterious history filled with unfortunate events and power struggles. Despite never experiencing celebration due to unusual circumstances, it safeguards a remarkable love story.
The Montenegrin Romeo and Juliet
In 1813, during Napoleon Bonaparte's forces' passage through the Bay of Kotor, including Perast, young soldier Ante fell immediately in love with beautiful local girl Katica. They dreamed of life together after the war ended.
When Perast's people raised the occupiers' flag on St. Cross fortress, the French commander ordered cannon fire. Officer Slovic fired the first cannonball. After the town surrendered, Ante rushed to find Katica, only discovering she had died from that same cannonball.
Heartbroken, Ante became a monk, maintaining Katica's grave with daily flowers and candles. When the candle failed to shine one evening, he was found dead at her grave holding a paper reading "Bury me next to her." Perast honored his wish, and the two rest together on St. George Island beneath two cypress trees.
Perast
Perast is a charming little town situated on the Bay of Kotor featuring narrow cobbled streets, red-tiled roofs, and stunning sea views. The town is renowned for well-preserved Baroque architecture, particularly numerous churches, palaces, and historic buildings. It maintains a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere ideal for escaping modern life's hustle.
Whether seeking relaxation or action-packed adventure, the Bay of Kotor offers something for everyone. The stunning scenery, friendly locals, and endless opportunities ensure unforgettable experiences.
