Zanjice Beach by Boat or Car: The Honest Comparison

Zanjice keeps showing up on every "best beach in the Bay of Kotor" list, and the water backs it up: a protected pebble cove on the Lustica Peninsula, clear enough to see the bottom in three metres, with the open Adriatic just past the headland. What most of those lists skip is that getting there by car and getting there by boat are two completely different trips — different time, different cost, and a different day.

By car: cheap, but you'll walk down a hill twice

The drive across the Lustica Peninsula from Tivat or Herceg Novi takes 20-25 minutes on a winding road that's scenic at 30 km/h and unpleasant at anything faster. Parking sits in a lot above the beach for around €5 a day, and from there it's a steep, uneven path down to the water — fine on the way down, a genuine slog in midday heat on the way back up, especially with a cooler and beach chairs.

By boat: no walking, and the Blue Cave is next door

A boat from Kotor covers the same distance without a single hill. You step off onto the beach directly, no parking search, no descent. The bigger difference is what's included on the way: Zanjice sits about five minutes by water from the Blue Cave, so most boat routes that stop here pair the swim with a look inside the cave — a combination that isn't realistic to do in one visit by car unless you also book a separate water taxi at the beach.

The trade-off runs the other way too: on a boat you're on the group's schedule, not your own, and a shared departure means less control over exactly how long you get in the water. If you want to set your own pace, a private charter removes that limit entirely.

Which one should you actually pick

1. Drive if you already have a rental car for the day and don't mind the parking search and the walk down — it's the cheapest option on paper.
2. Take a shared boat if you want Zanjice and the Blue Cave in one trip with zero walking or parking hassle — this is the combination most first-time visitors actually want.
3. Book a private boat if you want to set your own swim time at Zanjice and skip the fixed group schedule entirely.
